Collared doves don’t migrate; they stick it out throughout our Midwest winters. Their official common name is Eurasian Collared Dove, revealing their origins. Those we see in our region are probably the offspring of 50 doves released in the Bahamas in 1974. Their close cousin, the mourning (not “morning”) dove, also known as a turtle dove, is similar in appearance except for a few notable differences. The obvious one is the lack of the horizontal black mark across the nape of the neck displayed by the “collared” dove.
