One of only three varieties of cacti native to Minnesota, ball cacti survive the winter by reducing the water within the fleshy ball, thereby protecting the plant’s cells from damage in freezing weather. Each spring the water content is reestablished resulting in that definitive spherical shape that gives them their name.
