Erie’s Central Basin Canadian Fishing Ports

American anglers are familiar with fishing Lake Erie for walleyes. Some even venture north into Canadian waters near Pelee Island. But the fact is, numerous ports in Ontario also offer excellent access to walleyes. Here are a few to consider if you’re vacationing in Ontario this summer.

#1 Wheatley, Ont.

This town calls itself the “world’s largest freshwater fishing port” with commercial fishing a major employer there. The Wheatley Harbour marina annually plays host to the Southwest Outdoors Club sportfishing derby for walleye and “salmon/trout,” locally called “pickerel and rainbows.” Watch for the surface flotsam marking where the flows of Detroit River and Western Basin water meet for best steelhead action. Anglers line the banks of the marina and shoreline whenever cool water draws yellow perch inward.

#2 Erieau, Ont.

Fishing this time of the year for walleyes and steelhead is often straight out from the marina in 40-65 feet of water using Dipseys or downriggers and spoons. The Point of Pins to the Horseshoe or the “Rockline” are popular locations.

#3 Port Stanley, Ont.

Troll spoons and crankbaits on leadcore, Dipsey Divers or downriggers just above the thermocline for walleyes, with steelhead typically found in the upper 20 feet of the water column and increasing in numbers as the summer progresses.

#4 Port Burwell, Ont.

Use Port Burwell marinas to reach jumbo yellow perch between Hastings and the sand hills in 30-40 feet of water or use the same tactics as at #2 and #3 to catch walleyes and steelhead further offshore.
