Thermocline

Do you know what the thermocline is? Well, let me explain. Let’s say you have an average lake that is 40 to 80 feet deep. In summer, the upper layer of water is warmer and has a lot of dissolved oxygen. In our area lakes, it’s usually the top 26 to 30 feet, depending on water clarity. The bottom part of the water column is much colder and has little dissolved oxygen. In between is the thermocline which can be from 2 to 10 feet thick. The thermocline has a rapid drop in temperature and a rapid decline in dissolved oxygen from its top to bottom.

How does knowing this help you in your piscatorial pursuit? We all know that fish need two things to sustain life: food and dissolved oxygen. So, guess where the fish will be? That’s right: above the thermocline.

Now, find what the fish are feeding on and you’re in business.
