Nature Notes

Fierce Dragonflies

Dragonflies are incredibly nimble and fast insects. Some species can fly over 30 mph, and they can migrate for long distances, just like birds. Photo: US Fish & Wildlife Service

Dragonflies can also fly in any direction, and often change direction almost instantly. They can even fly backwards. Photo: US Fish & Wildlife Service

Their awesome flying skills come in very handy when it comes time for them to hunt other insects for food. Their aerial antics burn a lot of energy, so they often eat as much as 20 percent of their body weight every day. Photo: Clément Falize

Dragonflies have been around since the time of the dinosaurs, but we should be glad the species from prehistoric times are extinct. Fossils from 325 million years ago have shown that some ancient dragonflies had wingspans of 30 inches!
