In Search of Wild Asparagus
One of nature’s most delectable wild plants is asparagus. It often grows along fence rows and ditches because its seeds are eaten by birds and then deposited, undigested within their waste as they perch atop a fence rail or wayside branch. Wild patches are identified in the fall when the plant develops lacy fronds with red berries. Noting the loca-tion of these autumn displays enables you to make note of where to find the fresh, edible sprouts next spring.
Fool’s Gold Uses
Fool’s gold, or iron pyrite, is a mineral that has been used for centuries. It may look somewhat like real gold, but it is actually an iron sulfide. Although in ancient times it was used with flint to create sparks and start fires, today it is used as the cathode material in certain non-rechargeable lithium metal batteries.
Hunt and Fish in Camo
Fly fishermen should take a tip from hunters and wear camouflage clothing while fall fly-fishing. In fact, it’s a good idea to wear camouflage clothing year-round when fishing, but in the thin water of fall when the fish can see you a whole lot better it’s especially important.
