Give Santa Some Hints on Outdoor Gear

Can’t find that special gift for your outdoor enthusiast this Christmas? Maybe I can give you a few hints to help you get that special someone an outdoor gift they will remember and use for a long time.

For the anglers in the house, it is hard to beat a new rod and reel combo. How about an Ugly Stik GX2 spinning combo? The Ugly Stik GX2 is the next generation of Ugly Stik and maintains the strength and durability that they’re known for. The GX2 offers better balance for a lighter feel and improved components like the Ugly Tuff Guides and a more modern look. From panfish to walleyes to trout to salmon, this is a powerful multi-species combo. I still have my very first Ugly Stik I bought in the mid-seventies and it’s still one of my go-to spinning combos in my arsenal. This combo makes a great stocking stuffer.

Have a hiker or a spot-n-stalk hunter to buy for? How about a daypack from Mystery Ranch? The Mystery Ranch packs are made in the U.S.A. in Bozeman, Mont., and have quality workmanship. My son got me an ASAP Daypack before the hunting season this year and it has been one of the best packs I’ve ever used. The three-zip design makes getting at items easy, even if it’s on the bottom of the pack. The 500D Cordura material and YKK zippers stand up to wear and tear. There is a Mystery Ranch pack designed for any application you can imagine, and the quality makes them last a long time.

Whether you’re an archery or crossbow hunter, a new sight from archery’s number 1 single pin sight, the HHA Optimizer, will put a smile on your face. With “Range, Dial, Shoot” technology, a simple two-distance calibration method provides unmatched accuracy on all archery, crossbow and gun sighting systems to boost your success in any arena. I found this sight to be one of the easiest sights to “dial in” and the accuracy is unmatched. Backed by a lifetime warranty, there is a HHA sight for every level of archer. This is definitely something that Santa can deliver to make anyone a better shooter.

Good optics is essential, whether you’re into birding, boating or hunting. Santa loves the products that read “Made in the U.S.A.” and Vortex is one of the best when it comes to optics. This Wisconsin company offers riflescopes, rangefinders, binoculars and spotting scopes. With an unlimited lifetime warranty, they back up their products unconditionally and offer optics for every level of user. I have found my riflescope to be extremely clear, and when shouldering my rifle the optics are clear and focus immediately. When spot-n-stalk hunting, my Vortex Crossfire binoculars are the first items packed for a hunt.

Still not sure what to get the family members for Christmas? How about a fishing or hunting vacation trip? The Midwest is loaded with lodges, resorts and charter operators that can make for a memorable vacation for you and your family. Throughout reading MidWest Outdoors, you will find many places to book an exciting vacation for fishing, hunting or just plain relaxing. Oh, and by the way, a gift subscription to MidWest Outdoors magazine is another great stocking stuffer.

Tip of the Month
Since it’s Christmas time, this month’s tip is about a couple stocking stuffers. Good-ole Saint Nick would be happy to fill his bag of goodies with these products and stuff them into stockings all over the Midwest and beyond. I’ve come across some and have used a couple of these great products. The first is a Redi-Edge Knife Sharpener. Since I bought my first one several years ago, I use one almost daily in the summer. They are small, compact and easy to use and put an incredible edge on all my knives. I even got one for my wife to use on all her kitchen knives. The Burz Off is the next product, and one not to be in the woods without. This incredible porous stone will easily brush off all the burrs on your pants, jackets or sweatshirts. I keep one in my daypack at all times. I’m not sure how something so simple works so well, but you’ll certainly want to get one for yourself.
